The Steelers open up the season against division rival the Bengals. It won’t be an easy game. The Bengals went to the Super Bowl last year and are returning most of their team. We aren’t losing faith in our team though! It’s time to get excited Steeler Nation.
The Quarterback Situation
The Steelers will be starting the season with a new starting quarterback for the first time in nearly two decades. The thing is, no one knows who that starter is. Coach Tomlin might know, but he’s certainly not telling anyone.
There are good reasons why Tomlin is staying mum on the whole quarterback situation.
For one thing, quarterback may actually be the PIttsburgh Steelers’ weakest position group. The only one with real starting experience doesn’t have much experience winning. The heir apparent is a rookie. Mason Rudolph is a solid backup, but we all know he isn’t the franchise guy.
Not naming a starter means that the Bengals, and at least the first few teams the Pittsburgh Steelers play, won’t be able to prepare. That is an advantage in a non-advantageous situation.
In all likelihood, Trubisky will be the starter for the first few games. If he does well, he will keep the job for the season. If he tanks, expect to see Pickett as soon as week four if not sooner.
Pickett was drafted as the heir apparent and no doubt he will someday be the guy in Pittsburgh. Only time will tell if that will be this season or next.
Brace yourselves Pittsburgh Steeler fans. This could be a real rollercoaster of a season at the quarterback position.
Steelers Offensive Weapons Abound
Outside of the quarterback position, the offense couldn’t be any stronger. The O-line is strong and the skill positions are the best weapons the Pittsburgh Steelers have had for years.
The analysts are predicting that Najee Harris will be the best running back in the league this year (keep that in mind for your fantasy drafts!). He’s been working hard this summer and is poised for a breakout season.
Diontae Johnson signed a great deal with the team, keeping him a Steeler for the next two years. He may have decided to sign when he did because George Pickens is on his heels. The rookie from Georgia could start anywhere. This is going to be a wild tandem to watch.
Steelers Scary Defense
The Pittsburgh Steelers defense is likely the strongest aspect of the black and gold, as is often true. The defensive line could stop a train at full speed if they wanted to. That doesn’t bode well for opposing quarterbacks or their running backs.
Throwing the ball isn’t going to be an easy proposition either. Minkah Fitzpatrick is still roaming the backfield and the rest of the guys back there: Ahkello Witherspoon, Levi Wallace, and others aren’t going to allow for much YAC (yards after catch).
Of course, that is assuming the opposing quarterback can get a pass off with the kind of pass rush that the Pittsburgh Steelers bring to the table. After all, T.J. Watt is still one of the scariest players in the league.
