Penguins Acquire Forward Elmer Söderblom: What to Know

The Pittsburgh Penguins have bolstered their lineup by acquiring forward Elmer Söderblom from the Detroit Red Wings. In exchange for the 24-year-old winger, Pittsburgh sent a 2026 third-round draft pick (originally belonging to San Jose) to Detroit. The trade was officially announced on March 6, 2026, by Penguins President of Hockey Operations and General Manager Kyle Dubas.

Söderblom, a massive presence on the ice standing 6-foot-8 and weighing 252 pounds, comes to Pittsburgh with a contract that runs through the 2026-27 season. The deal carries an average annual value (AAV) of $1.125 million. This season, Söderblom has appeared in 39 games for the Red Wings, recording two goals and one assist for a total of three points.

The Gothenburg, Sweden native has spent parts of the last three seasons in the NHL, all with the Red Wings organization. Over 86 career regular-season games, he has accumulated 22 points (11 goals and 11 assists). His professional experience also includes significant time in the American Hockey League (AHL) with the Grand Rapids Griffins, where he recorded 54 points in 119 games, as well as three seasons with Frölunda HC in the Swedish Hockey League (SHL).
