Celebrate National Tartan Day

In the 1980s, the Federation of Scottish Clans in Nova Scotia came up with the idea for this annual celebration. By the turn of the century, Tartan day was being celebrated throughout Canada, the USA, and Australia.
In 2022, there are more than 25 million Americans of Scottish descent. In fact, because there are so many, and Scottish roots run so deep in America, the number itself can only be estimated!
It’s easy to see why Tartan Day is such a big deal. Tartan Day in New York is even more significant because a high number of Scottish diaspora are concentrated here.
What is Tartan Day?
Tartan Day is a holiday that celebrates Scottish heritage and is observed across North America and Australia.
In North America, it is celebrated on April 6th to commemorate the signing of the Declaration of Arbroath in 1320, which asserted the independence of Scotland.
In Australia, International Tartan Day is observed on July 1. The Australian holiday commemorates the reversal of the 1747 Act of Proscription which forbade many aspects of Scottish culture including wearing tartan.
How Do We Celebrate National Tartan Day?
In NYC, we celebrate Tartan Day with a massive parade! The annual New York City Tartan Day Parade ventures down 45th Street and up 6th Avenue on down 55th Street. Complete with bagpipers and drummers from around the country, the parade is an NYC event that you don’t want to miss!
Karen Gillan will be the Grand Marshal of the 2022 New York City Tartan Day Parade. Gillan is a film, television, and stage actress from Inverness, Scotland. She is best known for her roles in Avengers and Guardians of the Galaxy.
What Should I Wear on Tartan Day?
It’s Tartan Day, so you should wear tartan! Don’t worry, you don’t have to go as traditional as a kilt, but you can if you want to!
Tartan is the beautiful crisscross line pattern that you see in kilts, often in blue, green, or red. You can find this pattern on lots of clothing items from hats and caps to jackets, pants, and more.
