The Rangers and Penguins Stars Taking Over Milano Cortina 2026

For the first time since 2014, the Olympic Winter Games will feature the world’s premier hockey talent. After a twelve-year absence caused by scheduling conflicts and pandemic concerns, the NHL, the NHL Players’ Association, and the International Ice Hockey Federation reached a landmark agreement to bring the “best-on-best” format back to the world stage. For the fans, this means the return of true national “Dream Teams” and the chance to see franchise rivals become international teammates.

The NHL will officially pause its 2025–26 season following the games on February 5, 2026, allowing players to fly to Italy for the tournament. The Men’s preliminary rounds are scheduled to begin on February 11, with the high-stakes journey culminating in the Gold Medal game on February 22 at the Milano Santa Giulia Ice Hockey Arena. It is a grueling, twelve-day sprint that has become the most anticipated event of the winter sports calendar.

For fans of the New York Rangers and Pittsburgh Penguins, the rosters are packed with familiar faces. While some stars are making their Olympic debuts, others are looking to cement their legacies in what could be their final international appearances. From veteran captains to elite playmakers, here are the names to watch from your favorite clubs.

The Pittsburgh Penguins

  • Sidney Crosby (Team Canada): The face of Canadian hockey is back for his third Olympics. At 38, “Sid the Kid” remains elite, leading the Penguins in points this season. Already a two-time Gold Medalist (2010, 2014), Crosby is the bridge between Canada’s legendary past and its bright future, likely serving as captain once again.
  • Erik Karlsson (Team Sweden): A three-time Norris Trophy winner, Karlsson is the engine of the Swedish blue line. He famously led the 2014 Olympic tournament in scoring as a defenseman, and his world-class vision will be vital on the larger international ice.

  • Rickard Rakell (Team Sweden): Rakell joins Karlsson on a deep Swedish squad. Coming off a career-high season in goals, he provides Sweden with a versatile scoring threat who can play top-line minutes in high-pressure situations.
  • Arturs Silovs (Team Latvia): The Penguins’ young goaltender has already proven to be a giant-killer in international play. As the projected starter for Latvia, Silovs is the backbone of a team known for pulling off massive upsets against hockey powerhouses.

The New York Rangers

  • Mika Zibanejad (Team Sweden): Fresh off a record-breaking hat trick at the 2026 Winter Classic earlier this month, Zibanejad enters the Olympics in peak form. This is a massive “honor” for the Rangers’ alternate captain, who will be a primary scoring option for Sweden on the power play.
  • Vincent Trocheck (Team USA): Trocheck was selected for Team USA because of his relentless work ethic and face-off dominance. In a tournament where puck possession is everything, Trocheck’s “grit” makes him the perfect middle-six center to shut down opposing stars.
  • J.T. Miller (Team USA): A true “Swiss Army Knife,” Miller provides the Americans with physical play and high-end offensive production. Having played for Team USA at the 4 Nations Face-Off last year, he is already well-integrated into Coach Mike Sullivan’s system.
  • If you can’t make it to Italy, the next best thing is Hibernia Bar in Hell’s Kitchen. A legendary hub for Pittsburgh expats and local hockey fans alike, it’s the rare NYC spot where “Steel City” grit meets “Broadway” energy. With screens at every angle and a late-night kitchen, it is the perfect local headquarters to grab a Guinness and watch the Rangers and Penguins stars chase Olympic gold.
