If you love tennis you won’t want to miss this year’s US Open. The US Open Tennis Tournament kicks off on Monday, August 28, 2023, and wraps up on Sunday, September 10, 2023. It is played at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, nestled in Flushing Meadows, Corona Park, Queens, New York.
Who Will Play in the US Open 2023 Tennis Tournament?
Carlos Alcaraz and Iga Swiatek, the reigning champs and world No. 1s, are all set to make a comeback in Queens for the 2023 US Open. The entry lists, dropped by the USTA on July 19, 2023, confirm their positions at the top.
The U.S. contingent is showing some serious strength with 25 players securing direct entry into the US Open. Out of these, 14 American women and 11 men have earned their spots based on their rankings. Notably, two American players from each gender, Jessica Pegula (ranked No. 4) and Coco Gauff (ranked No. 7), along with Taylor Fritz (ranked No. 9) and Frances Tiafoe (ranked No. 10), have made it into the world’s Top 10.
Additionally, 14 players, comprising nine men and five women, have entered the tournament with injury-protected rankings. Among them are Jennifer Brady and Reilly Opelka from the U.S. Brady, who reached the finals of the 2021 Australian Open, is making a return to action after almost two years, with her first tournament in Granby, Canada. Opelka, on the other hand, hasn’t played since his appearance in Washington, D.C., a year ago.
Some big names with protected rankings are also on the roster, including 2014 US Open champion Marin Cilic, who has been out of action since January. Kei Nishikori, the man Cilic defeated in that title match, is also on the list, along with former Top 10 players Gael Monfils and Milos Raonic. Nishikori made a successful comeback in June by winning an ATP Challenger event in Puerto Rico, showing he’s ready to compete again after being sidelined since 2021, just like Brady.
How Much Money is at Stake?
The winners will be rewarded with a handsome prize of $2,600,000, a 4% increase from what Daniil Medvedev and Emma Radacanu earned last year when they triumphed in their first-ever Grand Slam victories. As for the runner-up, they will also see a 4% bump from 2021, taking home a substantial sum of $1,300,000 following the final showdown.
