As the Brooklyn Nets finally heat up, they went on an amazing winning streak that covered the entire month of December.
Perhaps no organization in basketball has faced the amount of adversity that the Brooklyn Nets have, but they have finally turned the corner, and that is good news for Nets fans. After what seemed like one fiasco after the next, a much-needed coaching change has breathed new life into the Nets.
A Fresh Start with Coach Vaughn
The Nets had a two-win, five-loss record in November when Jacque Vaughn took the reigns as head coach. Just days later the wins started to roll in, followed up by a perfect December.
Much was said about Vaughn, a long time assistant coach for the Brooklyn Nets, being a placeholder for the next new coach after the Nets fired Head Coach Steve Nash. Clearly, Vaughn wasn’t waiting around to be replaced. His long time, solid relationship with the team gave him the edge he needed to get them back on their feet.
This team is playing for Vaughn in a way they didn’t for Nash. They are focused and they want to win.
Kyrie & KD are Back
There is no doubt that Kyrie Irving and Kevin Durant are the big stars on the Brooklyn Nets’ team. They’ve both had a rough time in the recent past, from vaccine issues to trade talks, but that’s all in the past now.
Durant leads the league with more 25-point games than any other player this season (28) and has reached number 20 in all time career three pointers. Meanwhile, Kyrie Irving leads the NBA in scoring in the fourth quarter.
Both Durant and Irving are likely to be playing in the All-Star game this season.
Claxton & Simmons Thrive With The Brooklyn Nets
There was a lot said when Ben Simmons finally did suit up for the Nets and found a home in Brooklyn. When he started to find his feet and play well, some questioned if he and big Nic Claxton could co-exist.
Not only have the two found a way to co-exist, but they have also become good friends and have been absolutely thriving.
While Claxton and Simmons were a month ago viewed as non-shooters, things have changed. Simmons has been putting up double-digit numbers in scoring for the Brooklyn Nets at least half the time and Claxton scored double-digits in a string of half a dozen games.
They provide a level of diversity in defense that leaves opposing teams searching for answers. Simmons is averaging almost one and a half steals per game while Claxton has led the league in blocks and steals at different points this season. It seems that a spark started a fire when the Nets aquired Curry, Drummond and Simmons in that blockbuster trade.
