While the Steelers didn’t make it into the playoffs this season, the Steeler’s quarterback Kenny Pickett did deliver a gift for the holidays, giving fans something to smile about as the year progressed. His exceptional play under pressure led to game-winning touchdowns on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Day.
Week 16 saw a rough game between the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Las Vegas Raiders. The Steelers were down by four points in the last minute of the fourth quarter when Picket delivered a perfect strike to wide receiver George Pickens to seal the win.
Just a week later, on New Year’s Day, Pickett found running back Najee Harris for six points to put the team ahead of the Baltimore Ravens 16-13. Minkah Fitzpatrick finished the game with an interception, that kept the Steelers’ playoff hope alive.
Unfortunately, because the Dolphins beat the Jets 11-6, the Steelers were eliminated from playoff contention just before their game against the Browns ended.
What We Learned About the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2022
Pittsburgh has always been known for its “steel curtain” defense. This season’s defensive incarnation faced a lot of hurdles including injury. Even injury ridden, it is safe to assume, as Fitzpatrick’s interception indicates, the defense and our young Steelers (who are still showing promise) are in good hands with this squad.
Most analysts believe that the Pittsburgh Steelers have found their franchise guy in Kenny Pickett. If this holds true, they are years ahead of the curve by not having to struggle for seasons trying to find him as the Browns, Lions, and Texans have.
Steelers fans have something to be happy about even though they won’t be making it to the Super Bowl this year. The team is poised to be in the playoff conversation for years to come, and Pickett finished the last game of his rookie season 13-of-289 for 195 yards with a touchdown.
