Yankees’ Germán Throws Perfect Game, Sets Record for Most in a Single Organization for the Yankees Season
New York Yankees’ right-hander, Domingo Germán, achieved a remarkable feat on June 28, 2023, against the Oakland Athletics by throwing the 24th perfect game in Major League Baseball history. This outstanding performance marked the fourth perfect game in the Yankees’ franchise history, surpassing the Chicago White Sox to hold the record for the most perfect games by a single organization.
Despite an uneven season, with a 5.10 ERA and a 2.76 strikeout-to-walk ratio in his first 14 starts, Germán, aged 30, delivered an exceptional performance. His dominance on the mound against the Athletics included striking out nine batters on 99 pitches, with an impressive 72 of them being strikes. Earlier this year, Germán faced a 10-game suspension for violating MLB’s policy on grip-enhancing substances. Nevertheless, he demonstrated his skills and resilience with this remarkable achievement.
Aaron Judge Secures Starting Spot in the 2023 All-Star Game
Let’s all give a round of applause to the esteemed five-time All-Star, although this time he will have to observe the game from the sidelines.
Aaron Judge garnered an impressive 19 percent of the fan vote, securing a well-deserved starting position in the 2023 MLB All-Star Game that took place in Seattle. He was joined by the Angels’ Mike Trout, who received 23 percent of the vote, and the Rays’ Randy Arozarena, who received 21 percent, in the American League outfield. This marks Judge’s fifth time being elected as a starter in the Midsummer Classic out of the past six games.
As a distinguished member of the Yankees, Judge becomes the fourth player in the franchise’s history to earn the honor of being elected to the All-Star Game by fans on five occasions. He joins the elite company of Hall of Famers Derek Jeter, who achieved this feat nine times, Dave Winfield with seven, and Alex Rodriguez with eight selections.
MLB Draft 2023 Preview
The 2023 MLB First-Year Player Draft is scheduled to occur on July 9-11 in Seattle, Washington, coinciding with the 2023 MLB All-Star Game on July 11. Among the participating teams, the New York Yankees hold the 26th overall pick in this year’s draft. As the draft unfolds, the Yankees will have the opportunity to carefully evaluate and select a promising young talent who could potentially contribute to their organization’s future success.
Our Yankees Mid-Season Review takes us to the upcoming draft with a renewed focus on bolstering the minor league system. Limited by the loss of their second and fifth-round picks due to signing Carlos Rodón, the pressure is on their scouting team to identify hidden gems in later rounds.
Historically gravitating towards college players, the Yankees seek up-the-middle athletes, impactful hitters, and pitchers with strong secondary pitches and control. With a strong group of prospects already in the organization, the draft becomes a crucial avenue for replenishing talent. Despite the challenges, the Yankees remain determined to continue their tradition of developing promising players who can contribute to their success in the future.
